I am trying to set up Xconfig for a Laser 486SX with a Cirrus Logic VL
Bus video card and a Sceptre E461D SVGA monitor.

Does anyone have the appropriate settings for Xconfig for either the
above video card or monitor.

Thanks in advance,
Andy

System: 386SX/16+IIT FPU, 8Mb RAM, Orchid Farenheit 1280+ ISA, ext2fs,
        WD caviar IDE drive.

I left my system on for three days, after second day I noticed that xterms
were mysteriously dying. I'd lock up with xlock, and anywhere from an hour to
ten hours later, when I unlocked, my xterm was dead (gone). Locking followed
by immediate unlocking produced no problems, and the emacs windows also around
didn't appear to die.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Elan

: installed Linux distribution. I didn't get many responses other than
: "post what you find out", so I did some digging and found the solutions
: to my problems. For those who are interested, here's a summary:
:
: 1. How do you set the auto-repeat rate for the keyboard?
:
: I was on the wrong track looking in the kernel source --- the
: auto-repeat is done in hardware, not software. However, it can
: also be changed by sending the right codes to the hardware. There
: is a program called "kbdrate" that does exactly this. I found
: this program in the Linux archives on ftp.uu.net, in the util-etc...
: archive.

On Slackware 1.1.0 kbdrate is there already in /etc/kbdrate.
:
: 2. Why is LILO starting Linux by default the first time I boot after
: a Linux session, rather than DOS which is set up as the default?
:
: It turns out that "the first time" part of the question was leading
: me in the wrong, and very confusing direction. The reason it did
: this only the first time was because I was resetting the unrequested
: Linux boot before it completed. The problem was that in the SLS
: distribution, /etc/rc.local always runs the script /etc/lilo/bootparams,
: which sets up Linux as the system to boot "next time" --- I suppose
: this is so that /etc/shutdown can re-boot Linux, but it was what
: was causing my problems. Renaming /etc/lilo/bootparams fixes
: this right up.
:
: Anyway, I hope some people find this information useful. I'm by no means
: a Linux expert, but I'm enjoying it more now that things are getting to
: a usable configuration.

Check out that FTP address.. Military.. Talk about cutting back on your
military spending! I can already see Uncle Sam selling off a couple
hundred thousand SCO licenses infavor of a Yggdrasil CD. It even gives
Linux a rally song..

   From the halls of Montazuma,
   To the shores of Tripoli.
We're running all our tanks off,

Of course this means were all gonna have to crack down on all the noise

I bet if we contribute enough stuff to that FTP site, Al Gore will get

I have not received my CD either. So far I've sent 4 emails about it.

I did receive various replies. The first one (middle of Oct.) stated
that they were making some organizational changes and that my CD might
be shipped in several weeks. Another reply in early Nov siad that the
CDs for Canada would be shipped the following Monday. After allowing
a reasonable time for transit I sent them another email message this time
with my mailing address just in case their records had been messed up (it
has happened before; remember all the nasty letters about owing them
money after you sent the cheque??)

The same night I followed up to a post on this group on the same subject
and did not use the most curteous language.
I got a response to this post as well, this time from Jay directly telling
me to send them my real address (which I had done the night before).
Looks like they're realy getting organized now.

Does anyone know why the CDs were shipped outside Canada two weeks
before inside Canada?

Is there anything else we can do to get some CDs? (right now I'd be happy
just to get even a C&W CD. At least I could give it to someone as a
Christmas present.

Maybe next year at the same time I'll have all my CDs and maybe there will
be hockey games in Hell. The chances as I see them are about the same.

Ernest.

I won't comment on the general idea... but you're missing a very important
piece of data for all the DRAM based boards:

  virtual (!) resolution :
  clock used :

This has major impact on all DRAM based boards. Numbers of 75k for 1024x768
and a 45 clock go with 45k for 1152x800 and a 110 clock on the same board /
machine.

Hallo,

Besten Dank

I'm operating a dialup BBS as well and keep polling mail and news via UUCP.
I never had any problems like those described, but I also never even
considered using 16450's for another OS than DOS. Using 16550's was well
discussed here, and I don't want to start the discussion again. However, if
you want to avoid *possible* (or better *probable*) problems you should
go for the 550. It pays.

This is a 486DX-33, pl14, two no-name serial cards with IRQ's 3, 4, 5 and 2
(the latter two re-soldered), two 16450's for internal use (mouse & terminal)
and two 550's for modem use.

This would be better if news admins rmgroup'ed c.o.l. as requested. I

Please do not post questions to comp.os.linux.misc - read on for details of
which groups you should read and post to.

Please do not crosspost anything between different groups of the comp.os.linux
hierarchy. See Matt Welsh's introduction to the hierarchy, posted weekly.

If you have a question about Linux you should get and read the Linux Frequently
Asked Questions with Answers list from sunsite.unc.edu, in /pub/Linux/docs, or
from another Linux FTP site. It is also posted periodically to c.o.l.announce.

In particular, read the question `You still haven't answered my question!'
The FAQ will refer you to the Linux HOWTOs (more detailed descriptions of
particular topics) found in the HOWTO directory in the same place.

Then you should consider posting to comp.os.linux.help - not
comp.os.linux.misc.

Note that X Windows related questions should go to comp.windows.x.i386unix, and
that non-Linux-specific Unix questions should go to comp.unix.questions.
Please read the FAQs for these groups before posting - look on rtfm.mit.edu in
/pub/usenet/news.answers/Intel-Unix-X-faq and .../unix-faq.

Only if you have a posting that is not more appropriate for one of the other
Linux groups - ie it is not a question, not about the future development of
Linux, not an announcement or bug report and not about system administration -
should you post to comp.os.linux.misc.

Comments on this posting are welcomed - please email me !
