Sounds simmular. I recieved a letter from Jay in responce to my not so
curtious post, and appearently a CD will arrive eventually this year...
Also worth noting is my last message to JANA was bounced with a message
stating it couldn't be delivered for 3 days. So it sounds like they
have disconnected thier e-mail feed. (Not as if they ever replied to
e-mail anyways...)

Does anyone know of a PD version of Miranda for Linux.

I don't believe there is any such beast. My understanding is that
Miranda is a proprietary language.

If not how about a similar functional programming language
I have heard of a FPL called GOPHER for DOS, which should
almost be identical to Miranda, but I cannot seem to find
   it anywhere

Check /pub/linux at the anonymous ftp site ftp.dcs.gla.ac.uk for
Linux ports of several function languages.

        LML/Haskell B (version 0.999.5)
        SML (New Jersey)
        gofer

I believe that Haskell is probably the closest to Miranda (take this
with a pinch of salt since I haven't actually seen Miranda). Gofer is
Haskell-like but uses a different type-system and is a little more
light-weight. All functional languages tend to be memory pigs and you
probably need 16MB for Haskell and SML to run well under Linux. They
will run with smaller amounts of memory (I have run the Haskell
interpreter on my 6MB machine and am downloading the new version as I
write) but you will need lots of patience. Gofer is probably your
best bet if you have a small amount of memory and you aren't
interested in ad-hoc polymorphism.

Err,

I think one of the points of doing this was to _prevent_ users doing nasty
things... like booting DOS for instance.

I mean, as soon as you let someone boot a single-user
play-with-any-bit-of-the-hardware-you-like piece of **** like DOS you have
no security left anyway...

If you wipe DOS off your hard disk and the floppy booting is disabled in the
BIOS which is then password protected... how the **** is this program going
to make any difference ?

Better get it to check it doesn't run under dosmeu I guess (and break it
if by some mischance it does) :)
I would hope the kernel protected the CMOS completely anyway - probably does.

Price out that Linux X-Terminal, and you will
find that my company can sell you a real X Terminal for less (15" Color, $983),
and you will avoid the hassle of trying to setup, configure, and maintain
a diskless Linux box, and probably get better performance as well.

(No flames please, Linux is great, but not as an X terminal)

Yes, I have. I have also given linux to non-internet connected and

I had this problem when I tried to use a remote printer using the netconf
script supplied with the Nascent distribution. The booklet says that the
lpd print server "should only be running on the machine specified as the
printserver in the network configuration script". However, I solved the
problem by starting lpd from rc.inetd on the remote machine.

As far as I could see, the documentation does not explain that lpr uses the
socket /tmp/.printer which is defined by lpd. This is what lpr is trying to
connect to.

If your problem occurs when trying to start lpd then you have a problem
with access permissions.

I also had difficulty finding what entry to put into the /etc/printcap
file for a remote printer. The following example is given in "Essential
System Administration", AEleen Frisch, O'Reilly & Associates:

    remlp|print on hamlet's letter quality printer:\
        :lp=:rm=hamlet:rp=lp2:sd=/usr/spool/remlp

where lp= local printer (ie none), rm= remote host, rp= name of printer
on remote host.

Hope this helps.

Subject: OGI Speech Tools patches(here)
Date: 9 Dec 1993 14:29:55 -0500

These are the instructions as I got them to patch the non-ported source
of OGI Speech Tools v1.0 to Linux. Somebody who can help with the
floating point exception error in Lyre please contact one of us. It's
a very useful package- and that's the only real problem.

                                        Jim
________

Hy,

I had to do the following changes to compile the Speechtools:

        o edit conf.sun4.conf (or create a conf/linux.conf)

                        GCFLAGS="-O2 -I$TOP/include"
                        CC='gcc -fpcc-struct-return -ansi'

o edit conf/etc/mkdirs.sh and add at least one line at
the end of the script (p.e. echo ok)
I don't know why I had to do that but without it mkdirs.sh always
returned an error and the make in the subdir you where in
was finished. Any other solutions :-) ???

o uncomment the really senseless declarations of atof() and atoi()
without parameters (!!!) in the following files:

                        lib/libnspeech/segmentlist.c
                        lib/libnspeech/strarray.c
                        bin/nopt/nopt/nopt.c

o edit bin/auto_lyre/LyreStringDefs.h and uncomment the define
of XtRFloat there because this is already done in
                /usr/include/X11/StringDefs.h

Ok, after doing that the stuff compiled quite good.

But I still have the following problems with <lyre>, the really best
tool I saw to visualize speech and spectrograms etc. (I have the binary
running on our SUN's):

o I can load some wav-files and the labels on the left side showing
the minimum and maximum of the wav-file are really changed but no
speech data is shown on the display.

o Whenever I want to open an tdat-display I get an floating point
exception and the core will be dumped.

I do not understand anything of X-programming but may be there are some
conflicting types causing that problem. I got the following warning while
compiling lyre:

It depends on which S3 board is used.
S3 boards that use the BT485 RAMDAC are currently limited to a 85Mhz clock,
since this RAMDAC requires special programming at high clocks.
This includes most of the high-end S3 cards, like the #9's.
The BT485 will be able to support a 135Mhz clock (for 1280x1024 @ 74Hz)
when the XFree folks get the support for it.

S3 boards that use the AT&T RAMDAC can use a 110Mhz clock with the
current XFree2.0 S3 server (but no higher).
The ISA Actix Ultra+ board which I use and sell
has the AT&T RAMDAC, and I recommend it as the best S3 card for XFree2.0.
