I can get Slackware 1.1.2 by ftping, then downloading it, but
for various reasons, I'd like to get it on a single CD-ROM.
Can someone provide me with the name, phone number and address
of a company I can purchase this from? I would prefer a company
that accepts MasterCard, if possible.

Subject: 8-16 users, internet connect, and routing on one linux box?
Date: 4 Mar 1994 14:57:34 GMT

I'm trying to set up small internet node for myself and several other users
as cheaply as possible, but I have a few questions that I couldn't find
the answers to in any of the docs, FAQs etc.

I need to support 8 to 12 users on dial up lines. I'll have a 56K internet
connection. My planned setup is Linux running on a 486/66, 16-32M memory,
and a multiport board that can handle the high speed modems and the
internet feed. I'm not planning on having a router since I'll have
only the one Linux box attatched to the internet (the dialups will be
supporting shells only, no slip). The machine will support the usual goodies:
mail, news, ftp, etc.

So the questions are:

Can I get away without a router or would a router be a big help
in offloading work from the Linux box?

Is this too much for a single machine to handle (I'm talking
in terms of I/O from the modems and internet connection.
The computation load won't be too great)?

Finally, if it is feasable, what multiport board can handle
      8-12 14.4/28.8 modems?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you are using `csh' try putting this in your `.cshrc' or `.login'
alias manual 'nroff -man \!* | more'

If you are using `bash' try putting this in you `.bash_profile' or `.bashrc'
function manual () { nroff -mandoc "$@" | more; }

Then just type `manual seyon.man'.

I just purchased a Zeos system. Among other things, the motherboard
provides a socket for builtin Fast SCSI-2 support. According to Zeos,
this is an Adaptec 6360 chip. Is this supported by Linux? If not,
is it similar enough to anything else by Adaptec to make a reasonably
quick port possible?

Greetings. Miquel van Smoorenburg has released his excellent
TELIX clone called minicom. You can find it on sunsite.unc.edu
        in directory /pub/Linux/apps/comm/minicom-1.60.tar.gz

I have also uploaded my color & macro patches to sunsite
(they will end up in /pub/Linux/apps/comm/macs160.tgz soon)
which add what I can't live without.

If you have minicom-1.5B, please upgrade. The new code is
a lot cleaner, supports auto-Zmodem downloads, etc.

I would appreciate if someone could try the patches and let
me know if there are any glaring bugs. I've use them for
~ 2 weeks so they should be solid.

        Take care.

P.S. If no one complains, I'll post this to the announce
        channel.

I am trying to get smail+mailx send my mail over a
term connection. Local mail works fine. For the term
connection I got the config files from

pub/Linux/apps/comm/term/term/extra/smail.conf.tar.Z

on sunsite.

When I try sending an internet mail, I get the following
error message in the log file:

transport smtp: IP address for localhost not found

I have the following, one line /etc/hosts file:

Is there a mail guru out there who can put together a
bare-bones, no frills smail+term package using smtp

I think this would be very much appreciated by all the

I am using a progam called ftape. I think the current version is
ftape.9.9d or ftape.99d. I found it on ftp.funet.fi or wuarchive.
You can do tar straight to a Qic-80 tape drive.

It would be feasible for any software developer to license OpenGL and
produce binaries for use under Linux. Redistribution of source code
would be tricky, though. I don't know what the licensing implications
would be if SGI code was involved.

Absolutely! Get ftape As of one week ago, the most current version was
0.9.10. I bought a Conner 250MQ and downloaded ftape, and modutils, and

Subject: Need help on Firewall Router for LINUX p12.
Date: Fri, 4 Mar 1994 20:47:29

We have a 486 EISA machine loaded with Linux p12, from TAMU. We are using it
as a gateway(multihomed host). We are also running DNS on it. Since we are
running it as a gateway, for security reasons we want to run a Firewall Router
on it. So the question is "Is there a public domain Firewall Router available
for Linux p12 which doesn't require us to dedicate another machine for doing
just secure routing?". We would like to run Firewall Router on the Linux
machine itself. I have seen public domain Firewall Router called Draw Bridge
available at TAMU. But that requires another 486 PC to be dedicated to filter
the IP packets. We don't want to dedicate another 486 PC or any seperate
machine for just filtering IP packets. I have tried hacking the kernel by
hardcoding IP forwarding only for certain IP addresses, but it does not work
(it is forwding all IP packets, which is not what we want).

Any help, as early as possible, in this regard would be appreciated.

But remember that the IBM workstation runs about $8000 and the Mac runs
the MacOS - which certainly no Linux.

The PreP standard talks about using PCI I believe. So a Low end station
with PCI/ISA equipment and running linux would be a dream!

However the best way to pulling off requires getting a PowerPC for the
