* Note: I am uncertain of the legality of the following proposition. I have *
* not seen the license and am only proposing this as an area of investigation.*

Since the majority of people looking for inexpensive OpenGL licenses are at
Universities, would it be legal within the contract of the University license
for a group of Universities to become a consortium? Each University would
purchase a $500 license and then, if permitted by the license, share "diffs"
or changes for their own implementations.

The only people not permitted to participate in this scenario are Linux users
not at Universities. The people excluded are either computing enthusiasts
or commercial users. I appreciate the motives of small colleges and
univerisities.

Is it OK to run Linux on a PCI motherboard (I have the impression that
the support for PCI *devices* is rather thin still) when all the cards
connected are ISA? I'm wondering whether to get a 486 APOCOM motherboard
with Phoenix BIOS and Intel Saturn PCI chipset - and all the cards
going onto it to start off with would be ISA. Any danger that this might
not work with Linux...?

The motherboard has an on-board SCSI - NCR 53C810. Is this supported?
The SCSI Howto mentions that "generic NCR5380" is supported - if I
assume that the onboard SCSI is "generic NCR5380" will I get any nasty
surprises when trying to install Linux...?

I have pretty much the same problem with my CSLIP connection. If I just
keep doing things on the net (ftp, telnet, whatever) I stay connected, if not
the connection drops in a few minutes. My routing table seems to be the
thing affected, whether the routing being munged is the cause or just an
effect is unknown. Lately I've taken to simply leaving myself rlogged in
to another site, but this is an unacceptable long-term solution.
Oh, and it's not due to my CSLIP server timing out, they've removed that
capability for my connection.

I have grabbed Mosaic 2.2 from somewhere (Sunsite probably), and I have the
following observations:

1) I can't type into forms which are embedded in hypertext documents
[I can paste into them from though]. I assume I haven't installed something
   somewhere...

2) When Mosaic is doing network transfers it uses select() with a timeval to
cause a short delay, so that the spinning globe and flowing data icon works
nicely - regrettably, Linux's select behaves differently to everyone elses,
and so the timeval struct gets decremented to zero, and so when Mosaic is
waiting for a transfer from somewhere, it consumes 100% of the cpu by drawing
   the spinning globe.

Hi there. I just got hold of MINICOM 1.6 and I like it.
The only problem I have is that I cannot get it to work with my
2400 baud GVC (hayes compatible) modem in 7N1 mode: I need to use
7N1 to log into school but it won't work because all of the AT commands
get send to the modem as 7 bits commands and the modem doesn't recognise
them. It works fine in 8 bit mode though.
Is there something I have not set properly? Why does Kermit work
perfectly in 2400,7N1 mode and not MINICOM?
Help!

The Slackware patch can do these same things, plus:

- you can specify terminal types such as 'vt100' or 'console' as the only
ones to be colorized so that Emacs and other programs won't be messed up.

- you can colorize by filename extension such as .gz or .tar.

I find the format of the /etc/DIR_COLORS (or $HOME/.dir_colors) config
file used by my patch easier to use than the format of the COLOR_LS
environment variable.

It's in /pub/linux/slackware_source/a/bin on ftp.cdrom.com.
You be the judge. :^)

Hi.

A collegue of mine and I are planning to write a book on Linux for the
dutch community. It should offer tricks & tips for installing various
distributions of Linux and an introduction to system administration &
unix for the typical DOS-user without experience with unix.

It will *not* be an introduction to C or an in-depth covering of the
hacking of kernels.

All vendors & distributors of Linux packages who would want to
see their products mentioned are invited to contact me by email.
This includes applications, both free and commercial.

Anybody who has experience with FOP's (Frequently Occurring
Problems :-)) is invited to share those experiences with us.

Administrators of ftp-sites and Bulletinboards in and near Holland
that have a good covering of Linux are invited to send us their
internet addresses / telephone numbers.

Editors of journals and authors of articles or books on Linux are
invited to send us complimentary copies of their stuff, regardless of
language.

In short: everybody who thinks she has anything that should be
mentioned in such a book is asked to contact us.

Error sources include the reading patterns of the users, the number of
times the counters have been mentioned in both groups, the phase of the
moon and the imminent release of Linux 1.0.

Personally, I don't think 10 times as many users means 10 times better,
or Microsoft Windows would be the best operating system in the world.

Followups would have been to comp.os.linux.advocacy.....set to
comp.unix.advocacy for want of a better group.

(To get included in either count, send E-mail:

For free BSD-derived OS-es:
  bsd-counter@uninett.no, subject line "I use <BSDversion> at <place>

For Linux:
linux-counter@uninett.no, subject line "I use Linux at <place>"

<place> can be work, home, or school.
<BSDversion> can be FreeBSD, NetBSD or 386BSD)

Hi, I have a 486DX50 running Linux and X.

I have an Amiga 2000 w/5 Megs attached as a text console but I would
like to know if anybody has ever tried to make it work as an X terminal.
The Amiga has a stock 68000 (7 MHz) thus running BSD is out of the
question ....

Thanx in advance...

And what concerning Europe (and especially France) ?

Can you check this further. The other week I asked a chap at ASK UK over
a game of pinball (as you do) and initially he was quite positive.
Unfortunately it turned out that the port was for Sinux not Linux.
