Subject: Floppy disk with 1.68MB, non-std. MS-DOS format. How to?
Date: Sun, 13 Mar 1994 02:16:25 GMT

Sorry for cross-posting, but this topic is made up of 3 questions:

1) What to do to get floppy disks with capacity greater than {1.2,1.44}MB?
2) Are there obvious drawbacks or caveats to consider when doing 1) ?
3) Are there any tools out there which enables one to perform at least
read-only operations on those non-standard floppies, on a normal, IBM-
   compatible system running stand-alone DOS?

As far as 1) is concerned, I know one answer: Running the emulator
`dosemu' (0.49pl4) under Linux it is possible to issue a command like

   C:\>FORMAT B: /T:80 /N:21 /H:2

which produces a disk that can hold 80*21*2*512=1,720,320 bytes of data.
Under the assumption, of course, that B: is a 3.5" high density drive,
and that the appropriate kernel patch has been applied. This patch can be
found on Sunsite; /pub/Linux/kernel/misc-patches/fdpatch2for15.tgz.
The same result is achieved using fdformat(8) and mformat(?) under Linux.

There might be other methods to do it, some of them might even not require
Linux...

   2) Using 21 instead of 18 sectors should be fairly save, compared with
an increased number of tracks. 83 tracks are reported to work. Beside
safety considerations comes one major drawback to mind: This is far away
from being portable. So

   3) is there a MS-DOS program which ensures minimal ability to exchange
data using this medium with plain PCs running MS-DOS?

Any thoughts are highly appreciated.
Thanks,
   Th.

Right idea but I think the variables may be incorrect. At least I got
it to work with:
        DIP> get $remote xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
        DIP> get $local yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

==================================
More detailed SOLUTION:

I had problems with dip errors on 0.99.15*. I updated to dip.3.3.7
and Linux ALPHA 1.0 and it now works. From what I remember, it goes
like this:
        bash# dip -t
        DIP> port modem
        DIP> speed 38400
        DIP> term
        atdt<phone#>
annex or Zyplex or whatever>> slip
(some systems may present a menu here. anyway do your remote
slip thingee and get something like)
annex ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx your ip yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
(Excape back to local here: usr Ctrl-] )
        DIP> get $remote xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
        DIP> get $local yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
        DIP> default
        DIP> get mtu 1500
        DIP> mode SLIP

At this point I got a: Network unreachable error so I worked around as
follows. Note the status:
        1. dip exited.
        2. the phone line is still connected
        3. ifconfig reports the the slip interface is now up
        4. route shows one slip route

At this point I repeat all steps except the "term/atdt stuff"
        bash# dip -t
        DIP> port modem
        DIP> speed 38400
        DIP> get $remote xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
        DIP> get $local yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
        DIP> default
        DIP> get mtu 1500
        DIP> mode SLIP
bash# ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (you are now in business)

Again, "won't work" is hardly descriptive. There are no problems with the
interaction between noecho() and keypad(), at least in 1.8.5. If anybody
sends me code that illustrates the problem, I'd be happy to look at it.

At the moment IBM's PowerPC is a bit expensive, the Apple PowerMac are not
out yet (next week I beleive), but apparently some of the existing clone
vendors are going to start making PowerPC mother boards. There is some sort
of a hardware reference model that Apple/IBM/Motorola have agreed to that
they will provide to the other harware vendors. This makes PowerPC look like a
really good potential platform for Linux for the performance addicts.
Hmm, linux on risc :)

Maybe some of us should chip in and get Linus a PowerPC of some description

UUCP point of view: Why ask from some server that may not have the

Also, there's a problem with all new users: how could they find
