Yesterday I attended the Cebit in Hannover.
It was really amazing. I found there only 2 machines under Linux and a lot
of machines under Windows. The windows-machines were crashing quite often.
OK you know that and that is normal.
But you will get the right fealing wenn you see a representation by Microsoft
and their programs are crashing on their own system. Hundreds of people
have seen how stable the client server system works.
By the way, a so called Solution Provider sells a program with a very
descriptive name "mf_Windows".

So if you like to enjoy, go to Cebit and remember your stable Linux system.

Bernd

Having been running an old kernel (0.99pl9, I think - out of SLS 1.02)
for nearly a year now without any problems I was already impressed by
the general stability of Linux. However, my 'impressedness' went up
the other day when 4MB of the 8MB in my machine spontaneously decided
it wanted a holiday - the machine rebooted, and up came Linux again, X
and all, running in 4MB + swap, slower but fully functional!

Now that's what I call a stable system!

Please do not post questions to comp.os.linux.misc - read on for details of
which groups you should read and post to.

Please do not crosspost anything between different groups of the comp.os.linux
hierarchy. See Matt Welsh's introduction to the hierarchy, posted weekly.

If you have a question about Linux you should get and read the Linux Frequently
Asked Questions with Answers list from sunsite.unc.edu, in /pub/Linux/docs, or
from another Linux FTP site. It is also posted periodically to c.o.l.announce.

In particular, read the question `You still haven't answered my question!'
The FAQ will refer you to the Linux HOWTOs (more detailed descriptions of
particular topics) found in the HOWTO directory in the same place.

Then you should consider posting to comp.os.linux.help - not
comp.os.linux.misc.

Note that X Windows related questions should go to comp.windows.x.i386unix, and
that non-Linux-specific Unix questions should go to comp.unix.questions.
Please read the FAQs for these groups before posting - look on rtfm.mit.edu in
/pub/usenet/news.answers/Intel-Unix-X-faq and .../unix-faq.

Only if you have a posting that is not more appropriate for one of the other
Linux groups - ie it is not a question, not about the future development of
Linux, not an announcement or bug report and not about system administration -
should you post to comp.os.linux.misc.

Comments on this posting are welcomed - please email me !

I could get these? Thanks in advanced,

I'm having an occasional problem on my SLIP connection that causes DCD
(incoming) to drop out momentarily.

When this happens, Linux drops DTR in response, and the connection
gets broken. Generally it happens only once in several hours, though
sometimes it will happen several times in a row over a space of an
hour before it will settle down.

What I would like to do is increase the delay between the time Linux
detects lost DCD and the time it drops DTR ... would like to increase
it to around a second or so.

If someone could direct me to the portion of the code that monitors
DCD and drops DTR, I can take care of the rest. But I've looked all
through /usr/src/linux/ ..... (I forget the rest of the path to
serial.c), grepped on things like DCD and DTR in as much of the rest
of the source as I can find, and don't see where it's happening.

Linux version is 0.99.15, Slackware 1.1.2, using agetty in inittab to
open up the serial ports (for some reason I was not able to get getty
or getty_ps to do what I needed, probably just a config or RTFM
problem, but in any case agetty works fine).

Any assistance or pointers gratefully accepted.

I've already commented on this but let me repeat myself. My comment was not
a put down of your favorite unix. (and they have mention porting it to
just about every major unix and unix clone so I wasn't singling out linux).
Its just that the reason why they wouldn't port to os/2 (lack of installed
base and developer tools) go double for just about any unix system out there.

Any help is 'prectiated, an e-mail with a working CONFIG would be appreciated (hint hint)

   * Linux includes more frills, FreeBSD doesn't include any support for news,
or a decent mail reader. Also some of the GNU utilities that I prefer (such
as less) aren't included. This isn't a huge problem, just download the
   source and compile it.

While you're correct that SlackWare does contain more interesting
goodies "out of the box" (I have a copy myself!), we do try to provide
such things in the form of "ports", which you can get in the ports
collection on freefall.cdrom.com (~ftp/pub/FreeBSD/ports). We also
provide binary releases of things in "package" format
(~ftp/pub/FreeBSD/packages). For 1.1, this has also be substantially
enhanced and organized, and you can get a good preview of this by
looking in ~ftp/pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/ports (you can also grab
all or some of it by asking for `<dir>.tar.Z' and the ftpd will
automatically tar, compress and send it to you as one file).

The only real problem I have right now with FreeBSD is it doesn't seem to
recognize my tape drive (Archive VP-150e with SC-402 controller). I have
customized the kernel to match the configuration of the controller (IO 0x100h,

I don't actually think we support this controller.. :-( If you can
give more detail on the SC-402, it's possible that someone can hack a
driver up by looking at the Linux sources. One advantage to Linux is
that they _are_ faster than writing drivers for less main-stream
devices than we are; they have the numbers! :-(

One other thing that I can't seem to figure out is if there is in-kernel
support for a Microsoft bus mouse. Didn't see anything in the docs.

There is support - take a look at the mse entry in the /sys/i386/conf/LINT
file.

I'm going to work at getting my FreeBSD setup up to production level, adding
X, news, elm, and some custom stuff. If I can get it working, I'll
   probably stick with it.

All of those are already ported and available in the ports collection
(some in ready-to-run package form).

If all you really want to do is be able to change the root password,
the easiest (and safest) thing to do is to

1. Boot from a floppy
2. Edit /etc/passwd to have no root password.
3. Reboot from the hard drive.
4. Log in as root and set the password normally.

You should probably buy a book on UNIX administration.

While I too am a die-hard vi user, most people probably prefer the
mouse. Try making it user-configurable. Check out XBoing in
ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/xboing2.0-tar.gz. Justin Kibell (the author)
has a "-nograb" option for users who want to retain control of their
mouse, but defaults to keeping the pointer within the window.

You should note that Sun's Aviator (version 1) didn't grab your pointer,
and you could die if you accidentally moved it outside the window.

I had this problem with XBoing, so I allow my pointer to be grabbed. If
I want my mouse back, I just iconify the window; I use 'twm' and have
bound f.iconify to <ALT><F2>.

Hope this helps,
Claude
P.S. I keep thinking I'm dreaming and will wake up...DOOM on my Linux
     box...*grin*. I'm buying episodes 2 and 3; should I wait for the
Linux release or is it many months away?

Hello all !

I have done this, it isn't easy. The common problems are
- Setting up the Ethernet card. ( Very hard, even if you had
an "official" card, mine is a HP PCLan card ).
- You must look at every config file for :
elm, smail and tin. ( Btw. I hope now everything is going,
yesterday my tin & elm Adresses were wrong. Hopefully fixed ).
- The performance and the reliability for slow connections via TCP/IP
is not good in comparison to a HP-UX 9000 machine.
There are problems with closing the connections.
- gopher and archie Setup was simple, just get the Source, edit it,
  and do a make.

Hope this Helps
Thomas

If it was someone elses opinion Wolfgang would have stated it as so.

If someone states something (anything) there is an implicit
"In my Opinion". There is no need to write it afetr everything
