Subject: How to compile cxterm ?

Hi, Dear Linux experts:

I am running Slackware Linux 1.1.2pl15 and XFree2.0 on my
PC 486DX2/66MHz. Yesterday I tried to compile the cxterm
on Linux but I failed. I tried to add many "include" path
by modifying Makefile, but I still failed. When I tried to
compile cxterm source, I was told that CKILL, CTRIN, ...
were not defined. I guest these constant "CKILL, CTRIN..."
are included in a system include file. But I didn't know
what name it is and where it locates ? If you have some
experience on these area, please give me some help.
Thank you very much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

: Microsoft only. Xenix/86 was an acute embarrassment to IBM, which (according
: to rumor, at least) tried to kill the idea of Unix on PCs with the almost
: worthless PC/ix only to see Xenix/86 prove that Unix-like systems weren't
: *really* unviable on PCs.

The story that is given in the book "Gates" is that IBM needed
XENIX desparately as it was the ONLY piece of software out there that took
advantage of the multi-tasking capabilities of the (then) new 286-based
PC AT! IBM was VERY upset when XENIX was delayed (Microsoft delay a product?!
I've never heard of something so preposterous:)) and even more upset when
they found out how slow it was.

: That one's partially AT&T's fault. Their licensing (at least pre-Novell) was
: distinctly screwball; if I understand it correctly, SCO had to pay for (most
: of?) an SVR4 source-with-binary-resale-rights license even though they're
: selling SVR3.2 binaries.

their licensing is VERY expensive for SVR4, and quite frankly, I'm not sure
it is worth it. BSD is not even close to SVR4 in look and feel and i don't
here any complaints.

As you've already noticed, this is 99% a religious argument.... You might
want to post more details about what the application is, and what prorities
your associate has.

SCO is:
  - easiest to find commercial software for
  - hardest to get public software ported to
  - medium hard to develop for (but, once developed, easiest to use as a
source of software to port to other systems),
  - very hard to make secure,
  - not very reliable (up to ODT 2.0; I haven't heavily stressed an ODT 3.0
system, but the applications which I'm most concerned with have
unchanged version numbers between ODT 2.0 and ODT 3.0, so I'm not hopeful)
  - expensive, but runs on almost any PC hardware in existence.
  - easy for beginning admins to learn
  - painful for admins of large sites to deal with; it does not scale well.

AIX is:
  - very expensive
  - easy to port public software to
  - medium easy to develop for
  - absolutely the most reliable hardware and software I've ever used
  - not too hard to make secure
  - very complicated; the "obvious" way to configure things has subtle and
unexpected side effects that you will regret later.
  - not too bad for beginning admins to learn (adding users is easy; adding
    disks is hard).

If you don't already know everything you need to know about Linux, then you
probably shouldn't be using it.

If you're looking for something somewhere between SCO, AIX and Linux, you
should check out BSDI since it gives you most of the best aspects of all
those systems.

Please do not post questions to comp.os.linux.misc - read on for details of
which groups you should read and post to.

Please do not crosspost anything between different groups of the comp.os.linux
hierarchy. See Matt Welsh's introduction to the hierarchy, posted weekly.

If you have a question about Linux you should get and read the Linux Frequently
Asked Questions with Answers list from sunsite.unc.edu, in /pub/Linux/docs, or
from another Linux FTP site. It is also posted periodically to c.o.l.announce.

In particular, read the question `You still haven't answered my question!'
The FAQ will refer you to the Linux HOWTOs (more detailed descriptions of
particular topics) found in the HOWTO directory in the same place.

Then you should consider posting to comp.os.linux.help - not
comp.os.linux.misc.

Note that X Windows related questions should go to comp.windows.x.i386unix, and
that non-Linux-specific Unix questions should go to comp.unix.questions.
Please read the FAQs for these groups before posting - look on rtfm.mit.edu in
/pub/usenet/news.answers/Intel-Unix-X-faq and .../unix-faq.

Only if you have a posting that is not more appropriate for one of the other
Linux groups - ie it is not a question, not about the future development of
Linux, not an announcement or bug report and not about system administration -
should you post to comp.os.linux.misc.

In the Mar 94 Issue of the Linux Journal, there was an article on the
Debian Distribution which indicated the official release would take place
the beginning of March, 1994. I'm sure this has been delayed in order
to include both version 1.0 of the kernel and XFree 2.1, plus probably
a lot of other stuff as well. Can anyone say when they think the
official release will take place?

BZZZT! If this is how JANA thinks they're going to improve things,
they have flunked big time. How hard is it to write a perl script
that collects messages, ranks them by time received, mails a "you're
message #xxx, details follow" message, and when the count hits 500,
sends "so sorry, you're not in the magic 500, you're #xxx". A little
forethought and planning is not too much to expect.

Subject: HEELLPPP!!! Hard drive catastrophe :(
Date: 19 Mar 1994 13:59:12 GMT

HEEELLLPPPP! I am sending this message out to all of the groups
I belong to because I am on the verge of tears. I have been up
for the last decade (at least it seems) and I'm ready for the
nuse.

I have this hardrive. It is 261MB big. I had os2, linux, and dos
all running on it. However, I bought this other hardrive. It is
a 40MB IDE. Of course, I decided to pop it in and give it a shot
without reading the docs. Of course, my computer froze. Finally,
I got the jumpers changed to have the drive running as a slave. So
I put it back in and wow! it worked. But something was phishy. In
os2 boot manager, I couldn't get more than a 40 mb partition on drive
1 (261MB) to show as able to put into boot manager. But on the 40 mb
drive 2, I could get any size partition I wanted, to show up in the
menu as available to be placed into boot manager. Well, I went along
with it. I partitioned my drive 1 and it said C:, D:, E:. I partitioned
drive 2 and it said F: and G:. The f and g were 20 mb apiece. Then
I set C: installable and booted up dos. Great! Dos said that I had
two drives, d and e, that I chose for dos and should be formatted. So
I formatted them. I went through the whole installation. Great! I went
to dos, typed f: and nothing! It said it wasn't recognizable. O.K. So
I typed D: and dir. It said D: was 20MB. Same with E:. It seems that
dos formatted drive 2 and skipped drive 1's partitions. Well, no prob
I said. I'll go into linux fdisk and play around. But here is where
I knew something was wrong. Linux said it could not read the hardrive.
What! So I figured maybe the repartitioning did something and I should
format. So I ran a format from my hardware utils supplied by NEC. Linux
still could not read the drive. Well, not true. It read the first 40mb,
where dos was, but nothing else. I tried removing the new drive. Still,
it was not recognizable. I am going to cry. I think I just destroyed my
harddrive. Please tell me I didn't. Please tell me that it is the first
installation of Linux and its file format that is causing the problem.
Please tell me there is a way. I called IBM to ask why boot manager was
not letting me choose these partitions as installable and the guy (not
a specialist because it is the weekend) said he had never heard of such
a problem. Ahhhh!!!!!!!!! I tried calling the IBM 900 number but it is
broken at the moment. I called Seagate but they just have faxes. I
would get the fax over my faxmodem, but I can't use my computer! Please
tell me someone out there can help me. I know that alot of people
have been able to help in the past with software and hardware problems.
Please come to my rescue again. I will forever be indebted to you.
Thanks!

P.S. I am sorry for taking up so much bandwith with my individual
problems. But please look at this message as my one phone call from
jail. It is my last hope to get help. Please!!!!

I accidently mis-spelled a keyword in /etc/exports,
and when I re-booted the system it went into a terrible spin
filling up the syslog file with error messages. If someone
is in charge of that part of the code, you may want to change
the functionality to only report once and only report again
when the modification time on the file changes.
Also slow down the loop.
