According to the person I talked to at Philips, cm205's made
after July 1993 have a totally different io port interface from that of
drives made before July 1993, and cm206's have approximately the same
interface as the new cm205's. That is probably why I haven't been able
to get Kai Petzke's linux cm205 driver to work with my drive.

Until a few months ago, the only way that Philips cdrom drives
were sold in the United States was as an option to Gateway 2000 computers.
Unfortunately, the tech support person at Philips told me that both kinds
of cm205 drives were sold to gateway, so the fact that you have a gateway
does not necessarily mean that you have one of the old drives.

For an internet node, a 485DX-50 with PCI bus will you

Has anyone updated the dual monitor patches from pl13 to 1.0 yet? I
tried just to humour myself with pl15f and many of the hunks were applied
successfully while others were not. Most looked like they could easily
be applied manually though (need to learn how to use an editor other
than vi though ;-) ). If anyone has allready done this it would be
much appreciated. Have there been any mojor changes to the console
driver since pl13 that would cause problems?

Why not just fix floppy.c totally? Increase the track buffer if needed (might
be done in a .S file somewhere ...) and add a 2.88 drive type to the floppy
table. Its really not hard. I could do it in about an hour, if I knew the
specs (gap1, etc, etc) to be put in the table. But I don't have a 2.88 :(

Subject: Cheap Linux box
Date: 20 Mar 1994 23:43:09 GMT

I'm interested in building another Linux box, and I'm wondering what the
cheapest way to build a complete Linux system would be.

What I have in mind is a (possibly used) 386 system with 8 meg of ram and
a 120 meg hard drive, since this seems to be the baseline necessary to
run X comfortably.

However, the PC marketplace seems to be an absolute mess to wade through.
If I just buy something, I know I'll pay twice what I should have.

Am I best off buying a crappy used 286 and replacing the motherboard with a
386? Will the newer PC boards fit in an XT? Is building a new system a
better option?

Any input from PC gurus is welcome. If you have any hardware suppliers to
recommend, please do so by e-mail, to avoid "advertising" problems.

Thanks,
B.T.

Subject: VGA problem
Date: 21 Mar 1994 00:27:53 GMT

I know this is a common statement, but I have a problem. I am running
Linux (at the moment 0.99pl15) with a standard (so I thought) VGA card.
However, I am starting to notice several problems which make me wonder whether
my card is as standard as I think.
First, I compiled and ran DOSemu. Using plain old vanilla VGA I got no
scrolling. Adding CONSOLE locked up my machine. Adding GRAPHICS blanks my
screen and I never get one back (on any VC). I played and tested and logged and
read, all to no avail so finally I pretty much gave up.
Then I installed the console fonts package. I fired it up, ran setfont,
and immediately lost control of my machine. The screen changed back to one of
the first screens of information during bootup. I could not change consoles, or
do anything, short of rebooting.
Does anybody know anything about this? Do I have some type of screwed up
termcap entry or what? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

LSM Update:

Well its been quite a long time since you last heard from me. Here's what's
been going on concerning the LSM.

My last post to COLA was concerning whether or not someone else would like
to take over the LSM. Lots of you responded, mostly with "You've done a
fine job and I'd like you to keep doing it." I had quite a few offers to
take it over, but always with the congratulatory message from above. I
really appreciate your comments about my performance, lax as it is.

In the past 3 months, I've had to move to DOS/Windows because of an
after-work consulting job that needed that environment. Linux bit the dust
in early January on my system.

The up-side is that I've had to learn Visual BASIC and chose the LSM as a
first application to work on. It's turned out marvelously and will
definitely improve my dismal turnaround times. Most import functions and
maintenance functions can all be done with mouse clicks...a big improvement
over the last app that used text script files.

Anyway, I've one more function to write...generating an LSM to distribute.
The new program uses a fully relational MS Access database, complete with
memo fields for many of those nasty Comment and Required fields. Also, with
the MS CrystalReports, I could generate nearly any format.

What I'm asking for now is for an idea of what kind of format would be most
beneficial to YOU. I've never liked dictating the format, but have had to
due to the inflexibility and lack of programming time. VB changes all that.
I could certainly write out the old style format, but with many of the sizes
and line limitations gone, I can do nearly anything. So...

Tell me what you would like to see in the LSM format. If you can, try to
give some justification or reason for the way you'd like it, as the result
will be a compromise of sorts, and if you come up with a really good reason,
there's a better likelihood of its inclusion.

I'd prefer email responses, as I only monitor comp.os.linux.announce and
don't really follow the other groups. You can either respond to this post,
or, send email to: jeffk@msen.com

I'll be shooting for sometime at the end of May to release a new LSM, so if
you can get your ideas to me quickly that would help. And by the way, May
26 is the 1 year anniversary of the LSM. FYI.

Thanks again for your generous compliments and helpful comments,
-Jeff. :)

Ok, the only suggestion I can give you is to compile and run
linecheck as per the instructions. This turned out to be my problem,
I didn't have an 8bit connection. Linecheck will tell you what chars
you need to escape, which might make it work; it completely pukes if
any chars that need to be escaped are not. Good luck :)

Typically, when one deletes files and the disk space is not
released, it is because the process that has opened a file has not
closed it. Another method may be to look in /lost+found for the
particular partition and see if any wayward files made it there.

This must be related to reserved blocks, I guess. The ext2fs
maintains a special amount of space reserved for the super user. This amount
is 5% of the total disk space by default. Once you have used more than
95% of the total disk space, df says that 0 block is free. Since your fs
contains 70MB, the reserved blocks use 3.5MB on your disk.

This looks like a permission problem. Did you run e2fsck as root ?
BTW, remember that it is unsafe to run e2fsck on a file system which is
mounted in read-write mode.
