What would a mail script help? The hard job is to find the
snail-mail address from all entries, print them on labels, pack
the CD-ROMS, etc., etc. Everybody will use a different format
to put his address, not to speak about overseas orders.

Ok, you could use preformatted entries. But will everybody use
them? How much time will you spend correcting the entries, which
people messed up?

Doing things by hand means, that they work, at least, even if they
do so slowly.

Where can I find "talk" for Linux. Is there anything special I have
to do to run "talk" (i.e. do I need a talk server like the way IRC works)?

Subject: New x86 emulator project mailing list (bochs-developers)
Date: 24 Mar 1994 06:58:39 GMT

What is the bochs project?

  Bochs(TM) is a portable/extensible x86 environment emulator. The goal
is to give you the ability to run programs written for an x86 based
  MS-DOS/Windows platform, on your workstation.

Initially, the game plan is to offer emulation support for the 80486
CPU and a small set of popular hardware components (video, keyboard,
mouse, hard drive, etc) and for BIOS calls. This should provide
a minimally functional environment that would allow for you to load
DOS and friends from floppies. (While I realize that such a "raw"
emulation approach would not be efficient, it makes for a good
first step, and a proving ground)

The next step would be the addition of emulation support for the DOS
interface, remapping DOS function to !nix/X11R5.

Given the mentioned milestones are met, I plan on looking into
integrating bochs with the 'Wine' project, providing the final layer
of emulation ( Windows to X Windows ). This would yield something
  like Sun's Wabi software.

What will it cost?

ALL source code for bochs will be available for your anonymous
ftp pleasure, though I'm stamping it with a shareware preamble
much like the one that comes with the program 'XV' (written by
John Bradley). Of course, Wine code belongs to the Wine project.
If you find it useful, you send me $25.00 ... you know the deal.

Where is the status of bochs?

I've been working on bochs for about two months. Thus, I have
MUCHO work to do before I'll have anything to show. The initial
versions of bochs will be developer-only until more generally
useful version emerges. Deadlines bite, and I'm not even
going to venture a guess as to when first developers only version
  will be offered.

What can I do to help?

There are two reasons why I announce my efforts so soon. The first
is because there has been quite a bit of Usenet talk of such an
emulator, the second is so that I can encourage interested and
capable people to join the bochs-developers mailing list. I'd like
to use the mailing list as a forum for discussion of questions
I have about the development of the emulator, and for future
  discussion between bochs developers.

If you'd like to join the mailing list, send email to:

    listproc@amscons.com

With the body of the message:

    subscribe bochs-developers Your Name

What environments will bochs support?
What is meant by "portable/extensible"?

Initially, !nix like environments which offer a POSIX system call
interface and an X11R5 window system. The code is written using
  ANSI C (gcc).

I'll do my best to include extensibility, so that if emulation
is not available for your favorite hardware/software component,
you can add it yourself without the need for extensive code hacks.

What is my experience with the x86 environment?

I can spell DOS, and picked up my first 486 book a few months ago.
Now, I have a library of books on the Intel x86 architecture, DOS
and Windows, and have dreams of redundant NDP opcodes. Seriously
though, I'm a greeny to the internals of the x86, but have had
experience on other platforms using assembler and should I say
disassembler. ;-) Am learning as I go.

A logical "drive" under MS-DOS is simply a logical partition, which is
created on top of an extended partition. As described in the Installation
Guide and elsewhere, you can install Linux on such a partition; just use
Linux fdisk to create the partitions and install from there. Of course,
you should delete the MS-DOS logical "drive" first (assuming it's empty).
Sorry for the confusing terminology. MS-DOS seems to think that it owns your
computer.

I'm using a Wangtek 5099 (QIC-24) tape drive through an Archive SC499
(QIC-02) controller. QIC-02 support isn't compiled into any stock
kernels as far as I know, but I think all kernel source from 0.99.12
onward includes the drivers for QIC-02 tape drives.

Apparently, drivers have also become available for QIC-40 and QIC-80
tape drives (the ones that run off of your floppy controller).
Someone else probably knows more about those drives and the necessary
drivers. (I think the drivers are included in the kernel source
distributions for 0.99.15 and/or 1.0.)

This was precisely my point. While I don't doubt Ian's good intentions,
I was more than a little annoyed by this backdoor circumvention of well
defined USENET rules. Although, unlike others, I did vote in the straw
poll, I assumed this really was a straw poll, whose results by definition
don't give anyone mandate to do diddly; unless Ian (and the folks who are
making this claim) are using a decidedly non-standard definition of the
term "straw poll". If the supporters of this idea feel so inclined, they
can call for an official vote to change whatever they want.

I don't think this area IS covered by existing rules; if you can
cite any, I'd be interested to know.

Of course, you might argue (in fact, I think you are arguing) that the
creation guidelines should apply by analogy, althouth the guidelines

I am guessing something along the lines of mapping the left side keys

Finally, where would I want to look to enable this?
ol[v]wm source would probably be a good start. Anywhere else?
